Berlin to Munich New years eve

Travel Forums Europe Berlin to Munich New years eve

Hi there, I'm flying into Berlin early on the 28th of December and I hoped to make it to Munich on the 31st to catch new years there.

I tried the website www.bahn.de for train times on this date but it won't give me any times.

Anyone have any ideas if trains are running from Berlin to Munich on the 31st of December?

Thanks in advance

Trains will be running until the afternoon, some will go all night. You should have no problem finding a connection. Just buy your ticket in advance over the internet in early December. Reserve a seat too, the trains will be packed.

The reason you cannot find any connections is that they do not sell any tickets further away than 90 days. There will also be a switch in the train schedule in the second week of December, so getting minute-correct departure times is impossible up until December 1st.

What I don't understand however, is why you are going from Berlin to Munich for New Year, when half of Germany goes to Berlin for the event?

Well I heard that Munich is more fun than Berlin, I really don't know. Would you consider Berlin to be a better place for New Years than Munich?

If I do stay in Berlin for New years, I'll have to leave New Years Day for Munich and I wouldn't imagine there will be trains running.

I'm a bit pressed for time in Germany as I have to make it to Austria.

Thanks

Trains will be running on New Years day, just on a slightly different reduced schedule. Means that there will be for example only two trains from Berlin to Munich instead of four. Just reserve a seat in advance.

BTW, if you are trying to get to Vienna, it is better to go via Prague from Berlin.

U can book the train journey, online, if u have a credit card, at www.bahn.de. I admit, it is not the most user friendly web site.
Would u be interested in Flying, to Munich? Much faster, and probably not more expensive. I will check the prices and availability for u.

Have spent a chunk of time in both, and would plump for Berlin for New Year over Munich, although there will be plenty going on there as well. Trains will run on NY day, just not start up quite so early as normal.

Also, be aware that TT are not yet reliable, because the winter schedules (due to come in to effect Dec 11th) are yet to be 100% finalised. It is in the closing stages of planning now, but regardless of what anybody - including staff at DB, for example - tells you, nobody can guarentee exactly what is running at New Year or any date after Dec 11th. And ther ewill be changes this year, because December is the start of permanet scheduled running/timetabling of the new Berlin reworkings and Nurnberg - Ingoldstadt NBS, both of which have been on temporray and part workings thus far, and both of which will have an affect on Berlin - Munich services.

It will be a little while yet before the winter schedules have all been signed off and uploaded to the system. The current "best-guess" system is unlikely to be radically different, but it may chnage.

Wow thanks for all the help guys.

I'm not sure if I can book a seat on a train as I will be travelling with an Interrail pass. I guess I'll stay in Berlin for New Years and try to make it to Munich on the 1st of January. I was originally planning to go to Vienna via Prague but my pass will only cover two zones and Czech isn't included. I'm planning to stay in Innsbruck before heading to Vienna anyhow.

Thanks again

If you are on Interail, simply buy a seat reservation for the train you want at a ticket office in any of the main train stations when you arrive in Berlin on the 28th. Should be just a few EUR extra.
