BUT NOT FOR LONG...

Got an email from Connexionbyboeing today, the business set up to offer wifi onboard flights. I tried it out for an hour earlier this year and naturally found it very cool.. Today I received this:

On August 17, 2006, the Boeing Company announced that after a detailed analysis of the Connexion by Boeing business, the company has decided to exit the high-speed broadband communications connectivity market. Boeing is now working with its customers to facilitate an orderly phase out of the Connexion by Boeing service. Passengers traveling on Internet-equipped flights will be able to use the service until it is phased out which will occur between now and the end of the year, depending on the airline.

Starting on Oct. 2nd, 2006, the in-flight Internet service will be free of charge.

Unfortunately it seems that inflight internet won't be available for much longer (at least for a while); hopefully it won't be too long before another company starts to offer this.. connexion is the only one right?

[ Edit: Turns out this is more like bad news than good news.. ]

Ohhhh! That's very good news indeed. I wasn't prepared to pay for inflight Internet, seeing the rates they charge - SQ is quite costly for me already.

But yes, it's good news it'll be free. Hopefully all the airlines will follow suit asap.

Thanks, Peter!

Edit: Read the amendment. Sucks that it won't be free for long. :(

Quoting Peter

Starting on Oct. 2nd, 2006, the in-flight Internet service will be free of charge.

Pardon my confusion, but doesn't that mean "the service we are discontinuing will be free until the plug is finally pulled", i.e., the end of the year?? Or is something (free) replacing it?

Or did I miss something? (That would not be unusual.)

Hmm, you have a point.. It did seem a bit too good to be true. After some further reading, the following question included in the email does seem to suggest it is more like a 'free period'

I have a Connexion by Boeing promotional card good for a discount, free minutes, or a free flight. Is it still valid?
You may continue to use any non-expired discount card while the service remains activated. When the free service period begins, in no event shall a combination of service discounts or free service result in a balance due to any user. Once the service is terminated, cards may not be redeemed or exchanged.

Sorry to get your hopes up. Looks like this whole thing is doomed unfortunately.
