I have decided to go travelling from mid January 2007 for a year. I have decided where I want to go etc but cant decided on how long to stay in each place so am looking for some advice. I shall be going to:
Cape Town overland to Jo'Berg -
Sydney Australia overland to Melbourne -
Christchurch New Zealand overland to Auckland -
Sydney overland to Cairns -
Singapore overland to Thailand
Any advice is very much appreciated. Also how much money do you recommend in each place?
Thank you in advance
I can offer a bit of advice on your Oz and NZ legs of the trip. Oz is truely a big continent, with such diversity, that if you really want to do it justice you'll have to put in the time to see it. If you're an explorer, 3 months would'nt be unreasonable, but if you're more of a touristy-sights person you could probably cut that down to maybe 1 1/2 months. I'm a native NZer that has had the time to travel my country well, but I've heard of travellers who were satisfied with a months visit. Although having said that, some also say it's not enough, but it is a small country. If you're a snow sports fan and get to NZ in winter allow longer to check out the many great slopes on your way up the country
Depends what you do - if you want to do work/volunteering you can stay a lot longer in each place.
The following times are my minumum recommended times to be able to see everything in enough depth:
Christchurch New Zealand overland to Auckland - 1-2 months
Sydney overland to Cairns - 2 months
Singapore overland to Thailand - 2 months
not sure about the others....
If you are heading of to NZ you should def try to spend most of your time on the South Island. We did 4 on the south and 2 on the north. Was to short though.... If you are lucky with the weather, and it is not just you, NZ is great for camping. You can rent a car for around 25-30 NZ$ and camping is almost free. There is lots of national camping sites that ask you to put $5 in box, up to you to pay really. Highlights in Nz for me were: Tangariro crossing (a three day hike in the land of Mordor -Lord of the rings-, Kepler Track, another hike. If you want to do the Milford Sound hike you have to book it way in advance. Aparantely it is one of the best hikes in the world. Some amazing caves on the north west tip of the south island (lost the name), swimming with sea lions (don`t bother booking a tour, you can do it by your self from the shore. You might want a wetsuit cause it gets verry nippy after a while...The glaciers, Mount Cook..... There is to much to name really.
Try to visit Laos as well on your trip. Was our highlight in se asia. There is four over visited places up there but once you leave these behind it is an amazing experience. The locals are extremely nice. We loved them.
If questions just ask.....
