Hey guys

well im backpacking Europe this Winter, i fly into Zurich on the 27th of December at about 6" and fly out of Geneva on the 29th (to Rome)in the afternoon, leaving me a grandtotal of 1 day to spend in Switzerland. Pefect for a poor backpacker like me.

my quesiton is Zurich or Geneva ??? I want to be in Geneva 28th night regardless just to be sure. Its a 3hr train ride which ive factored in. Geneva seems better imho but would love to hear from you

Cheers Anth

one day either in Zurich or Geneva...difficult to answer this question. But I would rather stay in Zurich one day more. I think there is more to see than in Geneva. Geneva has the flower clock, and that's about it. If you want to go out, I would defenitifly stay in Zurich. Geneva between Chrismas and New Years Eve is empty, because everyone is going home to see their families...and in Geneva live roughly about 50% foreigners, that meens most of the population will be gone....(might be a bit exagerated) and the other half will go their chalet in Wallis. ;)

cheers

it remains me of my friend in Geneva... Haha.. I guess it's the thing to do there. -.-" If that's the case, Zurich seems better in the winter.

I think some places will be closed. Not sure though. I don't know about the swiss rail. Never been there. =/

Well my plan to go to Switzerland is just to get a very quick look at the place, and eat some chocolate and cheese. Even if nothings open, guess i could still see what the place is like and take some nice photos of lake geneve and the alps.

I plan to return with "the boys" in 08 for Euro. Originaly didnt plan to fly into Zurich but the thaught of 8hr train ride made me change my mind.

Cheers Anth

You should definitely stop along the way to Geneva. Stop in Lausanne and go to Montreux for example, it´s a really beautiful train raid along the lake.

as far as "cities" go in switzerland they are all a bit lame (i lived in zurich so i can say this) they are just big towns the nature is the thing that takes your breathe away and with the excellent rail system it is easy to go to rural areas, if u want to see a city the luzern is probably the pick of the lot, it has a big lake and nice layout with a decent art/cafe scene.

oh and the rail system is EXCELLENT u can get anywhere (well almost everywhere - if u cant u can catch a train and a connecting "postbus") but it is really really pricey - more than one aussie dollar every minute and a half. You can get a gerneral abornament for 30 franks which lets u take trains all day. If u have a long train ride make sure u have charged your mp3 player or have a good book to read - the swiss have this unspoken rule that you never ever so much as look someone in the eye on public transport yet alone speak to them. Happy travels

I would vote for zurich and also would suggest that you take a car for rent that evening and drive to geneva.
