Travel Forums General Talk Safe to travel

Is it just me, or does the world seem less safe to travel in than it did, say, 10 years ago?

I remember I used to love travelling and wanted to do it so much in the future. Australia, India, Singapore, the UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, New Zealand. But now, it just seems so much more dangerous.

I know that it's places like Kashmir, North Korea, Iraq, Sudan, etc. that are unsafe. But it seems like those are also reasons nowadays for people to commit terrorist acts. Doesn't that scare you?

Should I just stop travelling? I don't know, but I hope my thinking here is flawed.

Nah, i mean the middle east has never been the best place to set up a tourist industry.

but come on, how many people have died from teroristness as apposed to being hit by cars? or other things.

[ok theres an arguments the terrorists could be driving the cars but no proof] ;)

and i mean if you insist on being scared you might atleast be scared cos your going across the world on a big adventure then scared in your bed room?

The world less safe? I don't think so. More a case of better media coverage I would say.

However 10 years ago I could not afford to travel and I am not about to let fear stop me now - besides it may never happen to me.

Well, there is of course a difference with 10 years ago. Back then I know you could join an organised tour and probably travel yourself as well in Iraq.
But nowadays a country like Sierra Leone is safe again to travel, although not every corner of the country.
I guess certain countries have seen a rise in 'normal' criminality like Honduras and other latin american countries.
Lots of African countries are no go since ages, like the Central african republic. That's not to say it's not possible to travel there but risks are considerably higher.

In general, the middle east is very safe to travel. For example Syria is probably one of the safest countries to travel in I'm sure.

By the way Mcspooty, North Korea is probably THE most safe country to travel in, although it's not by yourself. I've been there last year on an organised tour of 10 days. There is no chance of any criminality over there during your stay.

What about India. Is it safe to travel there, despite the Mumbai blasts and the threat of Kashmir-related terrorism?

Yep, after terrorist attacks in New York, Bali, Egypt, Amman en Bombay those places are among the more safe places. And cheaper to go as well....take the chance!
