spam title scrambling

Travel Forums System Talk spam title scrambling

An increasing number of promotional spam messages occurs in the forums these days with no text in the body of the post, but an URL in the title. After spam-reporting these, the title is still visible; wouldn't it be a good idea to hide titles of spam-marked threads from public view as well?

Hi Niels,

It's a pretty good idea, however often the spam marked threads are only showing like that due to one post in the thread that has been flagged. It would be a little confusing to others where that thread has all of a sudden gone to in those cases.... naturally, if there turns out to be so many one post threads that have the url in the title that it becomes really annoying, we can revisit this as an alternative!

Cheers,

Sam

Oops, I thought that there was difference between reporting a whole thread and reporting just one post within a thread... if there isn't, you're right of course :)

Most spam posts i come across or see flagged are new posts (and they are certainly the most blatant ones, not the sly ones pretending to answer a question first), so would it not be reasonably easy to say that if the flagged post is a new topic, then the title gets blanked as well?

[i'd also like to see something which says that if a poster with less than 5 posts, say, makes 3 new posts within 2 or 3minutes, which have the same title, then all get automtically flagged, and the users account suspended). That way genuine new users are unlikiely to get flagged - not many new users would post 3 identically titled posts, especially so quickly, as that is basically a copy and paste job - and if you don't advertise the fact that it is use of the same title (or content, although that would be a bit harder to check), then it would trip many spammers up before they realise what had happened.]

Rich,

We already have a mechanism to stop a member from posting too many spams in a short period of time. As for how it works, I will not reveal it here. It's TOP SECRET. We'd have to ban you to tell you how it works.

  • cough cough* I think that actually only applies to the 'hidden' postings, so things like messages where otherwise a spammer could send off 20 messages without being flagged or noticed by anyone. A similar system in the forum would definitely be an option (although I'm afraid it won't happen in the very very near future due to some other big projects). I'm pretty sure it ties in nicely with the next thing on the 'to do' list though so am adding it to the requests as part of that update :)

In fairness, old age, marriage and kids all do that to you. And when all 3 are relevant.... :(
