Carma,
You will be on I-95 going south, so I would definitely stop in Richmond and see some of the sights related to the Confederacy. Williamsburg is a bit out of your way, but interesting for a history buff. I would also stop in either Charleston S.C. or Savannah Georgia, or both! Two great historical cities that are not far out of your way. I have photos of both in my gallery. Of course Cape Canaveral is worth a stop once in Florida. Have a great trip.

I can affirm the suggestions you have already been given as being highly worthy places to spend some time as you travel south on I-95. I would also suggest a stop at Mt. Vernon, the home of George Washington, which is only about 10 miles south of Washington D.C. In addition, do not forget that Orlando, Florida would be only a short side trip for you once you reach the Daytona Beach area of Florida. If you are a fan of the Disney, Sea World, or Universal Studios theme parks, Orlando is must stop. Williamsburg ( the restored section), which has already been recommended, is worth the better part of a day.
Your inquiry mentioned that you might plan on making the Washington to Miami drive in 3 days. While you can certainly do that, if you want to enjoy the various sites and experiences that are available, I believe you should allocate several additional days if possible.
