Having lived in the United States my entire life, and having traveled extensively both throughout the States and to many other parts of the world, it is my opinion that currently, in order to account for costs of lodging, food, transportation, entertainment, some clothing and items needed daily, and a few gifts, it would unwise to contemplate spending 6 months in the States with less than between $150 and $200 per day. You could possibly get by on less, but the quality and location of your lodgings and amount and nature of your food would be severely compromised. You also would be struggling to find dollars in your pocket for things such as amusement park or other tourist site admission fees.
Good luck and have fun.

We dont intend on going to any theme parks but will do some touristy attractions but not many - it's more a road trip

We might be buying a VW camper so we shud save on hostels ect.

We hope to bring 10,000 GBP is that enough for 6 months?

Are you bringing that much in "cash" (ie travelers cheques, cash, etc) or will you be bringing part of it and leaving the rest in an account in the UK to access though debit/credit cards?? I am asking because there are certain requirements for bringing in amounts over $10,000USD.

There is no limit on the total amount of monetary instruments that may be brought into or taken out of the United States, nor is it illegal to do so. However, if you transport or cause to be transported (including by mail or other means), more than $10,000 in monetary instruments on any occasion into or out of the United States, or if you receive more than that amount, you must file a report (Customs Form 4790) with U.S. Customs. Failure to comply can result in civil and criminal penalties, including seizure of the currency or monetary instruments. Monetary instruments include U.S. or foreign coin, currency, travelers checks, money orders, and negotiable instruments or investment securities in bearer form.

There is a discrepancy between the above website and the US Customs website as to which form has to be filed.
