We have a 3 day stop-over in LA on the way to NZ at the start of a 5 month trip so were wondering what's cool and most importantly free/cheap to do there. Obv know about the amusement parks but they are probably out of our budget, will definitely look to do the baywatch run down Venice beach tho!

Any ideas gratefuly received, especially if you can advise on costs as well. We are staying in the Venice beach area and will be there for March 15th - 18th.

Many thanks.

We went swimming a lot. My first summer in Los Angeles Coca Cola sponsored a program that would get you into the public swimming pools for an empty Cola can and perhaps a quarter. That was many, many moons ago. Of course, you are right: the beach. Venice Beach. And the Santa Monica boardwalk, too. And Santa Monica has an express bus that will take you direct into downtown LA (Union Station). Don't expect the usual European city center, but a day and lunch in downtown LA can be fun. It's the Line 10 Freeway bus and takes perhaps 45 minutes to an hour, depending on where you catch it and traffic. A ride down Wilshire Blvd would also be interesting.

Chris,
One thing you might do is visit the Getty Center in LA & the Getty Villa in Malibu. Both are fabulous museums and both are free. You can take a city bus to get there.

Hear, hear! Excellent idea. One day at the beach, one day downtown, and one day at the Getty Center or Villa.
