This may sound weird but bare with me. I was staying at a hostel while here in Oz and another english girl who was staying there was working at a "massage centre", which I thought was another word for brothel but apparently not! She was making 400 a day, which I guess is why she didn't stay at the hostel long but moved to a place near the beach for the summer. If anyone has heard of this job can they let me know a bit more about it. I realise it's more than just a reqular massage joint, but if there is no sex then what the hell? I've still got 6 months here and funds aren't great and I really don't think I can handle 6 months of waiting tables. I know that employers don't like to hire travellers so much, but this girl said that the centres don't care, they work by a week to week rota?

"Bare with me" -- no pun intended.
Why don't you either ask the woman who was already working there or else ask at the massage centre itself? How would we know (in my case on the other side of the world) what parts of the body are or are not massaged there?
(And then let us know!)
Sorry, probably should have explained why I posted it here. The girl, who I would ask but I am no longer in the same city, said it's a really common thing to find at least 2 or 3 backpackers where ever she has worked in Oz
$400 per day and no sex involved? I don't believe it.
I reckon the trap is to tell you that there is no sex involved so that you go along for a look, then you get the hard sell about the amount of money yuo can earn if you do more than a mere massage.
Any money that your "friend" would earn a nice little commission for every person she introduced.
Massage centre is a euphemism for brothel. Especially at $400 per-day.
majito is right, this is a brothel. I am a remedial/oriental/bowen therapist, i mostly work in luxury health spas doing massages and other treatments and yes i easily make 400 dollars a day BUT i have spent THOUSANDS of dollars on education and spent years networking in order to have obtained such a high paid position. As a backpacker with no experience and no connections it is not possible for u even be employed as genuine massage therapist without having some type of formal qualification. This is a big problem in our industry, u can imagine the kids of looks i get in a bar when i tell ppl i am a massage therapist thanks to all the pimps and prostitutes out there not being honest about the kind of business they are actually in.
It sounds great doesn't it, especially when you're getting strapped for cash, but unfortunately I have to agree with the others - it's dodgy! The same thing happens on cruise ships, but just don't be tempted.
