I am trying to decide between Llama Path, Pacchamama Explorers, and Mayuc (which seems more high end) - any thoughts on this comparison? Also, in your opinion, are crowded campsites an issue? Is it more fun to have more people around or is it better to be in a more secluded campsite?
When it comes to enjoying nature, I'd say the fewer people the better (which kinda means that you shouldn't do the Inka trail at all; there actually is a number of attractive alternatives available, which are at least as nice if not better).
I've heard good stories about Llama, don't know the other two. The main selection criterion imho should be how they treat their employees, and the environment. Any company without a clear policy on these counts should be shunned.
We used Mayuc and they were excellent. Although we didn't know this when we booked with Mayuc, they make a point of scheduling their treks specifically to avoid crowds on trail. They left at different times and days than most treks and used some private campgrounds. We heard some people comment about crowds on the trail but we hardly saw anyone. I think on the trail fewer people is much better.
