IM planning a trip through south america. So far i know that i want to start in peru, but from there i might just play it by ear. What i was wondering was roughly how long can you travel on 7000 in south america, if you are relatively tight with your money.
Also, are there any recomendations for where to go from Peru, im open to anything, i just want to travel
Excluding costs of transport, $30 a day in my opinion is doable. Only Chile and Patagonia (well, the touristy parts of it) are more expensive.
Where you should go partially depends on the season; in SA winter, don't go all the way south (south of the line Santiago - Mar del Plata, it freezes at most places during most of that period), and try to avoid tropical SA in the rainy season.
Second, bear in mind that east-west/west-east travel in SA is, very generally speaking, more difficult than roughly following the coastline. There aren't many roads in the interior, and most of them are in even worse condition than usual. Most people go clockwise or counter-clockwise around (part of) the cone; depending on how experienced a traveller you are, I'd recommend the same.
Third; don't take domestic and intracontinental flights, but have your timeframe determine your geographical aspirations. Flying where alternative ground transport is available is a hopelessly irresponsible mode of travel; about the best way to ensure that future generations cannot go to SA anymore at all...
have fun planning; we're happy to help you when that's needed.
Thanks for the help. I have started picking out some places that i woulld like to see, but for the most part I really like the idea of just ending up where i end up. As of right now im planning on leaving next Novemeber, so that i can finish this year of college and make some money before i leave. Also ill have to find some way to tell my parents that im taking a year off, should be interesting.
Thanks for the info
