Hello Tommi

U could prebook one, on the Khao San Road, with the following link. The link has pictures of the hotels and their facilities, so u can check them out, before booking. The Khao San Road is down town, and close to taxis and public transport.

In bangkok at the mo and had the same problem as you. I booked into the New World Lodge which is close to Kho Shan plus it is really nice. A good choice for a few days to adapt to the heat of bangkok! Plus I only made a restervation the day I was travelling and just got a cab with two other travellers going to the city from the airport once I got off the flight.

Hope this helps.

New Siam Guesthouse I is the place to stay near Khao San: http://www.newsiam.net/
I stayed at there and it was great. Khao San can get a little crazy at night, so it's nice to go somewhere a little quieter when you turn in for the night. It is a five minute walk from the heart of the action, the prices are decent, the accomodations are clean and the restaurant is pretty good. There is a great restaurant right across the street from New Siam I as well.

At this time of year I'd call or book ahead at least one day in advance to be sure you get the kind of accomodation you want (i.e. with or without a bathroon, fan vs. A/C, single or double bed, etc).
