I love Sweden in winter... the Swedish Lapland in particular, though Stockholm would also be perfect.

I'd love to go to Greenland and see nothing but white everywhere, or go to Iceland and see the same sort of thing but also see things like Gulfoss frozen over which would just be so beautiful. Northern Norway or Northern Sweden would also be good.

Last year I went to the Canary Island of La Palma and stayed one week in Santa Cruz de La Palma (the island's beautiful, compact, capital) and 1 week in the sea-side resort of Tazacorte (Santa Cruz was the best for me though). There was a Tall Ships Festival on Christmas Day, with stalls, the ships, great party atmosphere and friendly people. One of the best Christmas Days I've spent!

This year I am travelling for the first time to Sardinia, to stay for 2 weeks in the sea-side town of Alghero and I am hoping it will be equally memorable. New Year's Eve is supposed to be great fun in Alghero, with fire works and a real party spirit.

The Canary Islands are amongst the best within Europe for weather in the winter. Madeira is also lovely (I have visited Funchal, the capital, one January), but has a reputation for being favoured by elderly people - I didn't notice this and had a good time!

As another member mentioned, Germany is indeed a great country to visit at Christmas, as they do have wonderful Christmas Markets. In the south, Rothenberg Ob Der Tauber is an incredible, stunning, well-preserved medieval walled town.

Check out a really good website -snip- for an excellent list of markets, when they're on and ways of reaching them (although that part is aimed at British travellers, it may still be helpful).

Depending on your budget, Sydney, Australia is also a great place in winter and if you're there New Year, you'd certainly be impressed by the atmosphere around the harbour area.

[ Edit: Sorry, no promos please. ]
