I am travelling to Kerala in India in January and was wondering does anyone know of anything a little "different" to see or do whilst there.
Like are there any festivals in Jan- Feb or any particular cultural event that should be witnessed?
Any advice on the weird and wonderful...alternative activities... would be greatly appreciated.
Depends on wat u r looking for..if u r lookin to attend some kind of religious festivals, sorry to say that nothin of that sort happens in Jan or Feb...but yes there r lot of other things that u can do in Kerala...
im a native of Kerala n maybe i can help u....
I'll be there in December - any must do's for that kind of time? Festivals, Christmas events etc?
It's a bit of trip inland but you could try to make it to the Periyar Tiger Reserve. The place to stay there is Lake Palace (only reachable by boat) but you can soo some wonderful wildlife on the shores of lake at either end of the day when the day trippers have all gone home.
hi becki n maktub,
let me know wat r u interested in...wildlife,backwaters,beaches,art,festivals..kerala has everythin to offer,it is not for no reason that it is called God's Own Country...
so end of the day it comes down to personal preferrences..help me understand what will be ur choices n maybe i can help.
NB: I dont do this for money,i am an Operations Lead by profession.
January is a nice time to see Kerala!
If you are lucky you are still able to see some Theyam in Kannur (Northern Kerala) This is really impressive and absolutely worth the travel up north! Check Kannur Tourism office, they are very happy to tell you everything you need to know about Theyam including the dates and location of all the Theyam's held during September till January don't know the number off this office but If I am right it is in Lonely Planet.
At the 13 - 14 January there is Kodikutu Festival in Ernakulam (Cochin). I did not made it there but it seems to be an interesting event with procession featuring caparisoned elephants and plenty of folk art and Kerala percussion! I have this date out of an 2008 Festival booklet, it says every year at January 13 and 14. Please cross check.
At the 20 January Arthungal Perunnal is celebrated for 10 days. Devotes of all religions are expected. At the last day a big procession is held. I don't know if the Jan. 20 is the first or last day (held in Arthungal near Alappuzha)
At January 30 (date 2010) Thyppooya Mahotsavam, Sree Maheswara Temple, Koorkancheri (2 km from Thrissur) is a 7 days festival held for Lord Shiva with plenty of folk art and elephant pageants as well as fireworks
- Jan 14, Makaravilakku Festival (date 2008)
- Jan 19, Adoor Gajamela (date 2008)
I also recommend a day or two in Cochin, Munnar is quite nice or a good alternative to Munnar is a little trip to Ooty and by mini steam train down the jungle to Coimbatore (bougt in Tamil Nadu on border to Kerala [northern])
If you wanna go Beach I recon Varkala from where a day trip to Ponmudi Hill station could by a good idea
Kovalam is something for package tourists and you can be a bit in the wrong movie as a backpacker.
Attukal Pongala Festival 2011 is on 19th February 2011 in Trivandrum. If you are still in Kerala at this time, this is very special thing
... please note that all dats are not properly checked. Contact Kerala Tourism or/and ask google and co.
Lots of funn
Muaahahaha .... this question is 4 years old and I take my 20+ minutes to answer .... maybe someone alse is happy about it....
