Can anyone suggest some good hostels in Rome and Venice...
By good I mean not very highly priced (read cheap), centrally located, safe location and a good place to meet other travellers (since I'll be travelling alone)

virtually impossible combination of criteria, I'm afraid... location is expensive in Rome. Try hostelworld.com; that should give you some idea as to the price level.
U could try the following ones
Via Magenta 39
Tel: 06 445 4802
It is near the station.
Via Boezio 31
Tel: 06 687 4030
This is in a quiet street, in Prati.
I dont know exactly how much they cost, but i think around 15 to 18 Euros.
I found a couple of decent places on Cross-Pollinate, which someone on TP had suggested. Not all are hostels, but there are some decent appartments in there. Anything around the Termini can be a little iffy, though - although the The Beehive Hotel (where we had to pick up our keys) looked fantastic and offered dorm rooms. They have cats, though, in case you're allergic.
Enjoy your trip!
