I don't think the anti Oz-Experince rant really warrents a reply but...

I spent a month doing the pass from Cairns, down the East coast to Melbourne and has an absolute ball. I saw loads of things that I would otherwise have missed (staying at a cattle ranch, having a hot tub under the stars at an miner's farm, staying overnight at a monk's retreat) and made some great friends. I can't recommend it highly enough. Only thing is, if you don't like having your trip quite structured and would rather choose things for yourself, look elsewhere. Personally, after planning every last detail of a trip round NZ, I ws glad to have the responsbility taken off me. You can still do what you like with your free days when you choose to spend more nights in a certain place.

I have been on the Oz experience from Sydney to Cairns. I have also done adventure tours which is a linked company down from Alice Springs to Melbourne. I had a fab time.
People call them the 'shag bus' bus etc but it's really not, they probably label it that as you can actually meet people quickly and build friendships and/or relationships as you can travel with someone the whole way up and get to know them more than some of your friends back home as you're with them 24/7. If you hate the people on your bus, you can hop off and catch the next with a whole new set of people to meet, that's why its great! They help you book hostels but you can choose other ones if you don't fancy their choice and they will drop you there. Its just a great start to kick off your travelling, you will have the chance to catch goats, white water raft in darkness, horse ride, go zorbing (rolling down a hill in a big ball), surf, and heaps more. I worked at one of the out back stops where you sit under the stars in hot tubs, you can't beat it! really recommend it. Greayhound is great if you want more indepence, but people tend to just fall asleep on the buses and there is no interaction.
Hope that helps!
Em xx
