I am spending a few days in the UK in the lead up to NYE simply to see family however not wanting to spend NYE's watching the TV so I was hoping people might know of any big events/music concerts/entertainment for NYE. I will be based in cardiff but more then happy to make my way anywhere in the UK for the right event....gotta love megabus or National Express.
Rock music is def my genre so if anyone knows of anything please let me know. I have looked on the web and I am struggling to find info!
The place to be on New Year's Eve is Edinburgh, where Hogmanay has been more important than Christmas since thre Reformation - ie about 500 years ago. The traditions involve drinking a good deal of whisky and 'First footing' which means visiting homes as soon after the New year starts the better. In Celtic tradition the best First Footer is tall and dark and carries a lump of coal - or maybe peat. People throw open their homes and lay on food and drink - but take a bottle too. Go to the Tron Kirk before midnight and you will almost certainly link up with a group of total starngers for the rest of the night. See Edinburgh web site for celebrations details.
You have a wide range of site to check out, Edinburgh is the home of traditional Scottish New Year as Alison has said. Here are a few web sites to help your search and give you follow up contacts.
You will find all kinds of music catered for throughout the Hogmanay celebrations in Scotland.
You can check out Cardiff, Liverpool, London with the now famous Piccadilly Circus get together, however I prefer the Scottish scene, the Orkney Islands and the north of Scotland have various trad things none of them really your music scene.
If I can be of more help please get back to me.
If you are after something different and into rock then I can definately recommend the Krazyhouse in Liverpool who usually put on a wicked all-nighter. Slimelight in London is good too:
Personally I'd go for the Krazyhouse (awesome 3 level warehouse of rock and cheap booze!) but I'm biased cos I'm from the north
Hope this helps
