I'm flying through Frankfurt nov 14th and will have a layover for almost 9 hours before I head on to Johannesburg. Is it feasible to go out into the city from the airport by subway or something? And if so what should I go and see? I'm not trying to see the whole city or anything but I would rather be out and about than stuck in the airport. thanks

Since no one else has responded... two seconds of Googling: "the airport has a station beneath Terminal 1, from which trains depart regularly to central Frankfurt [13km to the NE], 24 hours a day ... The journey to central Frankfurt takes 20-30 minutes."

To be safe I think I would allow up to an hour each direction, just in case.

Hah! The Frankfurt web site says "It is worthwhile visiting Europe’s second-largest airport, Frankfurt Airport, even if you haven’t got a ticket." (Not sure I would agree.)

How about seeing "the city center"? Or if you have more specific interests you can click on the link I went to the trouble of posting and choose something that interests you.

I would personally go to a bake shop or cafe and read the paper or something (boring traveler that I am).

I went to the Frankfurt Zoo when I was there and I thought it was pretty good. Although that might be because I haven't really been to a zoo before because we don't have a real one in Iceland.
