Two years ago I stayed in Venice in hotel El Sole. It is not cheap, exactly, since its double rooms are around $150 a night, but a very good value nevertheless and Expedia or other travel site might have some specials on it. It is on a quiet canal(so you can take a gondola from the train station to your hotel), very close to Canal Grande, in a 15th century palazzio, and offers very pleasant courtyard for breakfast and relaxing. I really enjoyed it, despite the fact that during my first dinner in Venice I tried a local specialty: pasta with black squid and later during the night discovered that I was very allergic to it. :-)
I'll be in Italy this fall, too, but I have already seen Venice, Florence, Rome, Naples, Sorrento, Capri and Amalfi, so this time I'll go to the Lakes (either Lago di Como with Bellagio I adore gardens --or Lago Maggiore) for 10 days in September, and then two months in Sicily, Malta and Tunisia or in Puglia(Lecce, Otranto) , Greece(Corfu, Athens, Dodecanese islands) and Turkey.
