I'm due to arrive at Suvarnabhumi airport, Bangkok at 4.30 pm on a Friday night (5 Jan 2007). I would like to catch a train to Chiang Mai that night - preferably from Don Muang at 6:45 pm (or else 8.20 pm). I believe clearing the airport takes about 40 minutes. How long does a taxi take? Am I being too optimistic in attempting the early train?
Is it safe to just turn up at the station to buy four 2nd class sleeper tickets or should I take the risk of missing the train and pre-book? So many questions. Thanks in advance, learned people

wow!!!!!!!!!
Why are you taking the train when you could be a transit passenger with xfer to TG and clear passport/customs inm Chiang Mai?

Plan long to clear as you may have a wait for bags. It is a big airport and the diatance from the plane, if you are at a remote gate (Tarmak) is a bit so the bag have to go a ways in that part alone.

don't even thnink about the 6:40

Taxi at that hour....lets say mabey 1.5 hours on the bad side!

I would pre book the train at 8:45. I'm not going to bother being a netidiot and plan you trip out but here is the web site:
http://www.railway.co.th/eng/.... I haven't been on the train since flights to Buriram resumed. I'm made a few trips to Surin-BKK on the train since the 6+ hours of driving was too tiresome and left me unable to appreciate the reason for going to Surin

You came here looking for advice...I gave it to you from the beginning...fly.. From your arrival point go to thai transit desk for gate info here is a map http://bidding.airportthai.co.th/airportnew/bidding/map/map-inside11.pdf#page=4

but don't worry there are lots of people to help you. Anyhone in a Thai Airways Uniform is good and there is also a series of Help Desks note but the bright dark pink signs and similar color shirts on the staff. Nowhere in thailand shyould you expect service people and security gurads to speak english. Also at the the BIG intersection of concorses A,B,C,& D Thai Airways Transit desk is right below that intersections King Power Desk. Ther is a big beautifyul Sala in the middle of that interesection. Another King Power desk at the intersection of E,F, & G those desks have great maps. (Just checked my info on that map as I was doing this post from memory)

At the big intersections there are elevators. There is a help desk in the lounge area of the thai Airways Transit Desk. there you go. Also, don't let all the negative comments about SuwannaBoom get you down. I can tell you that from one who has been there (Obviously) it is just the almost biggest airport in the world, its new to everybody, there fore making it a great target for the Neibob of the Net. The airport is brilliant...
The Kings barge is magnificant...
