Travel Forums General Talk Cheapest international calls- internet vs cards?

Hello

I have recently run up some ridiculous bills ringing Australia from my BT landline here in the UK. Ooops
Does anyone know the best solution for International calls if I want to make a few calls to a mobile in Thailand or Landline in Australia?

I looked into Skype, but if you're ringing a normal phone, is it really cheaper than getting a card? Its about €0.11 per minute to call a Thai mobile.

When I was in Australia I got really good value phone cards which made international calls really cheap, but don't know if/where I could get them here in England. Anybody know?

Also has anyone used Skype? How is the quality?

Hi Clara,

I just finished talking over skype to a friend in Sweden and quality was like if she was next door. That said, I know it is important to have a fast internet connection to use skype, if you haven't got one using the landline with a phonecard is probably better quality. Concerning prices I find skype especially for ringing mobiles around the world the cheapest option.

Forgot to mention when using skype, calling from computer to another, you also have the option to see eachother if you have a webcam .

Hope this helps,

Steff

Hi Clara,

Skype is one good option.
Another option to make international calls is also through this service called CallBack. Which is like an online account where you will be able to call a number to trigger a call back to your overseas number (free incoming) and then u punch in the international number out. My friend introduced me to this service one year ago before I went to Australia for further studies. Can check that company out- globalroam pte ltd. The rates are dirt cheap!
