The best and cheapest don't always go well together :)

Personally, I think the best is to take a cab, but it's definitely not the cheapest. I vaguely remember having taken the train or a bus once too, which is probably the cheapest, but you might not get to exactly where you want to be that way

JFK is in NYC, so actually once you land your in New York. No travel required. ;) I assume, though, you probably want to get to Mahattan.

Personally, I like the Air Train. Here's info on taking the train: Air Train by the Port Authority (who runs it) and MTA - Air Train from JFK - info on the subway connections from the Air Train.

I don't, in general, like to point people to other forums when posting here (seems a little bit like cheating), but there is a great Wiki page on Flyertalk, the frequent flyer board (mostly business travellers). Here's the link: NYC Airports to Manhattan.

You'll note that the quickest way is the actually the helicopter ride. Though, probably out of most backpackers price range at $169 one-way.

If you had asked about Carnegie Hall we could have said "practice!" -- an old joke.

HI,

You can get an express shuttle bus for $17 which will take you where you want to go right to the door. Just come out of arrivals and turn right and there's a desk there where they will book you in (can't remember the exact details now). I arrived a couple of days ago and didn't have to wait more than 20mins for the bus.
Hope this helps.

Try the supershuttle bus service. That worked great for me. Check out their rates at www.supershuttle.com

Hope this helps,
