Hi All,

I'm in the process of budgeting for spending money on my trip to SE Asia. Outside Accomadation/food/usual necessaties can anybody give me an insight to the kind of prices you pay for clothes, gifts in Thailand. I have a bit of a shopping problem & although my boyfriend will have me on a tight leash over here, I was wondering if any of the western shops are much cheaper in Thailand or would the be relatively similar? Also, any information on shopping would be greatly appreciated, as I will be devestated if I go over & miss even the odd good shopping oppurtunities!

yes, shopping in thailand is definetely cheaper then in western countries. Its a fact! Best places to go shopping i'd say is MBK, Jatuchak and nowadays Platinum that I'd recommend from previous experiences.

I think the last poster meant to say "Pratunam" which is an inexpensive shopping area between Central World Plaza (used to be called World Trade Center) and Panthip Plaza (known for their huge selection of computer and IT products). Lots of street vendors selling "name brand" merchandise...that may not be the real thing. Watch out for those Rolex specials!

I think a lot of people will put MBK down in this thread, but Platinum shopping mall and Pratunam are certainly cheaper if you are any good at haggling.

Well, that's two people that have mentioned Platinum. Maybe that wasn't a typo that I saw. But I live in Bangkok and have never heard of any shopping center called Platinum. What is it and where is it located?

It's just a few hunrded metres down from Panthip plaza on the same side of the street (as you stand on the street and look at the entrance to Panthip the Platinum Mall is to the left of it). It has about 5 floors and is pretty big so you can't miss it.

Thanks everybody,

what do you think the best things to buy in thailand are. I don't want to be weighed down as we will be backpacking but are the clothes western style, and would the electronics be good value?

Thanks again!

Hi Clare,

Top Tip: designer jeans in MBK (ground floor near the central escalators). They cost around US$6-8, are good quality, plenty of styles and if you can come back in 30 mins they will have them fitted for you. (make sure you try them on again though as to be on the safe side they tend to leave the legs a little long!)

They wear well also. I have been buying them there for years.

All the best

Andy

My wife Paola stocks up on Diesel jeans and cotton shirts when she is in MBK. The shirts look great and cost US$2 or 3 each!

Pays for the travel!
