Travel Forums Europe I need travel advice for 4 days in Switzeland in December

My name is Fatma, I am a university student in Turkey. In 8th of December me and my fiance are planning to arrive Basel. Actually we already bought the tickets, but this happened very spontaneously so now i have 1 month to plan the trip. We will be there for 4 days but i have no idea where to see, how to plan the itinerary. Can you please give me some advice on how to use these 4 days in the best way. We are on a kind of low budget but if we can find a cheap place to stay we are thinking to rent a car.

Thanks in advance

Hi Fatma,
If 4 days is all you have, I would split the time there between Interlaken and Lucerne - 2 days each. Here are the specifics of what you could do at both places.

A] Interlaken (Switzerland) - it is a base for towns and places that epitomize the classic Alpine images of Switzerland. Here are some the things you can do there.
a) Take a boat ride on Lake Interlaken to Brienz.
b) Hike up to Lauterbrunnen
c) Take the train to Mt. Jungfrau (this is by far the highlight of my trip to Switzerland. It is a bit expensive but totally worth your while).

If you don't want to stay IN the city of Interlaken, other nearby options that will offer you the same flavor in terms of sights are Lauterbrunnen, Matten, and Gimmelwald.

B] Lucerne

a) Cog-wheel train to Mt. Pilatus
b) Dying Lion of Lucerne

Hope this helps.

Take care,

Hi Pranav;

Thank you so much for taking time to answer:) I wrote down your great suggestions and will search for hostels in those locations.
In the meantime any other advice is appreciated.

Thanks a lot, actually i visited your site before but then i had no thoughts of visiting switzerland, i had just admired the photos you took. The views are really great.
Do you think it will be too cod there? I mean i live in a place which is really cold and snowy in winter but there are no mountains around so i can walk with my boots that have some heels:) I am worried about my coat too. I do not want to fill my wardrobe with new clothes for only four days.
Anyway, thanks for the advice, although i am still a bit afraid since this is my first unguided tour and i will be the one dealing with communication issues(I know Turkish, English and a little German), i have things in my mind now, i have an idea of where to go and see.
Any other suggestions will be appreciated.

I just want to suggest Lucerne as well. It's so beautiful and the view from Mt. Pilatus is amazing. Be sure to take the world's steepest train back down!

Hi Fatma,

I would recommend you do a city trip. Visit Basel for at least one day. It is quit small, but has many things to offer. If you are interested in Architecture you will enjoy Basel. Also if you are interested in Art, Basel might be very interesting for you.

What I also can recommend is to visit the neighbouring cities. Specially I would like to mention Colmar and Strasbourg. Both have fantastic Christmas markets and offer good shopping. Or why not visit Freiburg in Germany? Or go to do some walking in the Black forest.

For Interlaken, I would visit another time in summer.

hope this was any help
