We stayed at Buddy Lodge which is nice and on Khao San Road so you can ease yourself into the action!

I have not stayed there, but I did find a decent priced hotel when helping another TPer. Google; 'woodlands inn bangkok'. Rooms for around 500bt and OK location. Worth a look.

There are tonnes of hotels and guest houses in the Banglampu area of Bangkok (basically where most travellers hang out). A good place for your first night is D&D Inn, right in the centre of Khao San Road. You can get pretty good rooms for your money (about B700 incl air con) and it is right in the centre of things without being too noisy like some of the guest houses on Khao San. Another good place is Rambutri Village Inn on Soi Rambutri (just around the corner from Khao San and therefore much quieter but still good vibe). You can get fan rooms there for B300 and it has a pool too. Don't worry too much, I don't think you'll have too much of a problem if you turn up not having booked somewhere.

Have fun!
