Just wondering if anyone bought a car to travel New Zealand and was it worth it ???

Put it this way: Ive been here since August and Im kicking myself that I havent bought one. It's a bit late in the day now, but its totally worth getting one. You can pick one up for about $1000.

The thing Ive realised about NZ is that you really need a car to see the good spots. It's a bit like Ireland that way. Even in Auckland, the public transport sucks and almost everyone seems to be driving. Of course, if you can get by without one, its preferable to clogging up the roads, but for seeing the more remote parts of the country its a good investment.

And they are really set up well for backpackers here - they have special car fares which are attended by the AA, who will check out teh car before you buy it. It's really easy to sell your car on when you decide to leave.

Hope that helps.

I defintely agree with Ev, the only way to get to remote, less touristy places in N.Z. is unfortunately by having your own means of transport. My best friend and I bought a campervan in Auckland before we started travelling around and I can definitely say it was worth the investment ;).
Only one thing though, if your intenting to stay less than two months its probably not worth the hassle spending your precious time with buying and selling a car (that will probably take at least a week).

hi. i managed to get a car in nz for $500. it got me and my boyfriend around for about 5 months until we left. it packed up on us in the last week though. definately worth buying a car. bus tickets are quite expensive and you can go anywhere if you have your own sweet wheels

go to the backpackers car market and see if you can get yourself a deal. a lot of people wait around to sell their car a couple of weeks before they leave so you can probably haggle a good price.

happy hunting!

Car prices are cheap, and so is insurance.
NZ isn't renowned for it's public transport system, and their are loads of great places where the buses just don't goto.
It also gives you the freedom to wander around at your own pace.
Good luck,
and enjoy your time in Godszone.
