... travel Time
If you´re planning to travel in a group or package tour for a couple of week so... you´ll be sorrounded(Cos` the organization) by english speakers...
But If your travel way is Backpacking and you want to inmerse your self in the local culture, of course you should take a basic course at least...
and your Best friend in the first month will be a good pocket dictionary... I recommend it in stead of a phrase`s book...
Southamerica is a land of contradiction sometimes But in the whole wide world If you show your good manners and intention and take time to read about your next destination, you´ll be Wellcome ...

I arrived in Lima last January with not a word of Spanish. It defintiely was a challenge to get around, it's true, but it can be done. Seven months later I can get by in many conversations! :)

I learned so much because I had to. I found all the South Americans I met so encouraging and helpful. They think it's great htat you are making the effort to try and speak their language, and they love telling you what is particularly different about the Spanish in their specific country.

Dont let the fact that you dont speak Spanish put you off. :)
