I'm off to Romania and Bulgaria for a month in Dec/Jan. Can any one suggest any villages that are "must sees". I prefer not spending all of my time in the major centres.
I'm not really a skier so please don't suggest ski trips.

Bulgaria: Varna near the sea and Plovdiv....mmmm Plovdiv is simply lovely...the town of the 7 hills...as well.

Sophia....:(....not so much

My Bulgarian colleagues always list Plovdiv, Veliko Trnovo and Melnik. I myself was overwhelmed by Rila Monastery: http://www.pbase.com/jyri/pirin_bulgaria

Romania: Sigisoara!...Brasov is nice too

Bulgaria: Ive only been to Varna, and hated it. In the winter it turns into a dead town since its main function is a warm weather tourist destination.

Hi,
I would suggest you " The Merry Cemetery of Sapanta" and " The Monasteries of North Moldova"

Please check this out :

In winter, much of the Black Sea and towns/cities on the coast are utterly dead so generally best avoided if you don't want a really poor impression.

In Bulgaria, Sofia is kind of curious, as a large-ish capitral city without an obvious central point or soul. It's fine for a day or two though. Plovdiv, Rila, Veliko Tarnavo and Melnik, plus the open air museum at ?Koprivnitsa? near the Turkish border are all good. Having said that, Rila and Koprivnitsa may not be anywhere near as nice in winter, especially if the weather is bad...

In Romania, Sighisoara is cool, Brasov also nice (and accessible to mts if you want to go skiing/boarding), Cluj, Sibiu and Timisoara worth a look. Bucharesti is hated by most travellers - and even many Romanians - but i personally love it. It sure as heck isn't touristy, and is a complete chaotic mash of more or less everything, but it's a real city, and beacsue of it's history i find in fascinating and love going back.

yeah agree with Bucharest. I loved it for its rawness. Organized Chaos :) How anyone can drive around that city boggles my mind

hi there,

i travelled through romania last month for about 3 weeks and loved it. Sigisoara is a must - its absolutely gorgeous. I can give you a number of a local home that i stayed in for a couple of nights if you are interested (just will have to look for it ;) they are lovely and for a very small price take you on day trips around the surrounding countrysides. Also i would recommend going to the Peles Castle it is stunning..its in Sinaia (on the way to Brasov) you could hop on the train look around and catch another train to Brasov the same day...worth a trip. Brasov is also nice but apparently Nov is not a great time to visit Romania as from my experience..everything seem to be closed for refurbishment but its so far one of my fav places...i also loved Bucharest..theres just something edgy and funky about the city - and the people are absolutely lovely. its easy to make friends with the locals..you'll have a fantatsic time..

Thanks everyone. I think I have a plan.

Raz, if you can find the home stay contact details, I would really appreciate it.
