self conscious in hot countries!

Travel Forums General Talk self conscious in hot countries!

Hello all,

Don't really know what I am asking here but just wanted to bring up the subject to possibly get some reassurance.

I am a bit overweight, not ridiculously so but enough to make me feel quite self conscious. I'm not gona let my low self esteem stop me from doing what I want and am going travelling for the first time by myself next year to South America - aaah. Was just wondering if anyone else in the same boat had some worries about this issue when going travelling, especially to hot places full of beautiful people like Rio! My main worries are the fact of having to wear not many clothes and how this will affect my confidence when meeting people.
Gonna try to lose as much weight as possible before I go but theres only so much I can do in 3 months.

So any advice or tips or stories from people who know what I mean will be very much appreciated!

Love Emily :)

Well, if you plan it right, you can be svelte by the time you reach Rio. When I was in South America, I lost about 20 pounds by the time my 2 months was up. I still ate really well - it was just because I wasn't sitting around all day doing nothing, and therefore snacking because I was bored. I have read other similar stories of people on the road losing weight.

(Sadly, it tends to come back when you stop travelling ).

So, I'd say end your trip on the beaches of Rio - spend the first month hiking the Amazon or doing the Inca trail or whatever else you wanted to do. Then you'll look great by the time it's time to don the swimwear.

Hi Emily

Firstly, remember that you are not from Rio, so you really don't have good reason compare yourself to a slender brown six-foot stunner. My version of this experience is, a short, average weight English lass (like me) who goes to Thailand will feel like a huge clumsy giant compared to the tiny dainty South East Asian ladies. Or scruffy and unladylike compared to Eastern European girls, the list goes on. We are not all the same. We always compare ourselves to different people, but who's to say you're not beautiful as you are?

When you are meeting other travellers and making friends, it is unlikely anyone will give a hoot even if you have two heads, most people are genuinely more interested in YOU. Seriously, this is one of the most refreshing and addictive things about travelling, its not like home!

If you really don't like baring too much flesh, you can still stay quite cool if you wear the right clothes. My experience of travelling in places like India is, if you stick to loose, thin cotton clothes, you can still stay quite comfortable in hot places.

And if still you want to lose weight, as Greg says, you will possibly find in places like that its possible without really trying.

Good Luck, and enjoy yourself. I hope, like me, you'll find that travelling somewhere like that will be really empowering and give you a huge self esteem boost.

Clara

oh,come on EdAngeli,
is this your only problem?if so,take it easy!!
Nobody is perfekt!!!

there are not only Beautys in the World, you have in your mind the stunning Girls and Boys from the magazins, but believe me, not everybody in Rio or somewhere als looks like them.
It is your personality what makes you unique.
It is the same with age,we stay not for ever young,or good looking.
so what! You have to accept it,you may try to change it,but there is also a limit.
I'm 62,so what ever I would do,I never would look like I did when I was 30 or 45.
OK,I take it as it is,and believe me,I make many friends while travelling, mostly with people half of my age.
Be yourself, find your personal outfits you feel comfetable in.
Maeby you are not overweight at all.
Enjoy your trip,
Marlis
