hey good people,
would i be able to ask all the fine people out there a little advice please? im going to be in LA in july and New york in August? has anyone got any ideas on decent hostels out there (ones that arent to expensive as im on a budget). also any tips on what to do/go to/see/experience when im out there?
or on the other hand does anyone know about the "Los Angeles Backpackers Paradise Hostel" it seems pretty cool has anyone been to or known of anyone stayin at this hostel?
Stayed at Orbit in LA 2 years ago and it was very good.
Stayed at Chelsea Internationa hostel in NY and it was awful. Avoid.

In Los Angeles, you can go past USA Hostels Hollywood, that's one of the better hostels I have stayed at in 48 countries. If you book through http://www.usahostels.com, you will get it a couple of dollars cheaper per night than if you walk in or book through hostelworld. It is located only a few minutes walk from the main area of Hollwood Boulevard where the main touristy things are. It is also about 5 minutes from Hollywood/Highland or Hollywood/Vine metro stations which is the same line as you take to get to Universal Studios Hollywood. In my view, the City Walk is a must see thing at night time, sort of like Times Square is much better seen after dark than during the daylight hours.
As for New York, I have heard Big Apple Hostel is amongst the best but I know it is a bit on the pricey side so it wont suit your budget. I stayed at Wanderers Inn West, which is a hostel located on 113th Street, but I suggest avoiding that place even though it is about the cheapest in New York. If you get the same dodgy barstard checking you in as I did, you'll end up being accused of stealing and be threatened to have the police called on you. All of that because the dodgy receptionist checked me in, without giving me a receipt or a room key so I had no proof I paid. The fact they have cameras on you everywhere like you are on Big Brother (apart from the shower and room as far as I know) also makes it a bit uncomfortable. Other than that not having baggage storage for people checking out meaning lugging about 30kg around for 9 hours around town was a bit painful. The place was passable as far as quality goes, but certainly not spectacular at all and I would suggest avoiding that like you would a plague of rats. It is also in a pretty dodgy part of town with plenty of homeless hanging around the area.
