In Hong Kong - where to fly to for a long weekend?

Travel Forums Asia In Hong Kong - where to fly to for a long weekend?

I'm going to be in HK for 2 weeks. I want to fly away somewhere for a long weekend, anywhere within 3/4 hours of HK.

Where would you recommend? Not looking for scuba diving or anything, more just great sights, lots to do, etc.

So far:

Cambodia - Angor Wat & Phnom Penh
Vietnam - My fried went there recently so that's a no-no!

Any more?

Northern Vietnam would be a great place to go. A quick flight to Hanoi would give you lots of options like Halong Bay and Sapa, and of course Hanoi itself which is a fantastic city. But with only a long weekend, you wouldn't get a chance to see a whole lot. You would probably have to just stick to Hanoi with maybe one day trip.

I'm not sure Angkor would be worth the while just for a couple days. If you can fly straight to Siem Reap then you could spend a couple days in Angkor. Siem Reap is a whole days drive from Phom Pehn so if you fly into there with the plan of seeing both places, then you'll be pretty short on time with only a weekend.

My suggestion would be to head to Guilin in China. Its close to HK, you could even just take the train if you want (though that might waste too much time), and it would be a perfect place for 3 or 4 days. Yangshuo, just outside of Guilin, is one of the nicest towns I've ever visited with amazing scenery, and a day trip to Longsheng is great too.

Angkor Wat. Recently voted second of all the 'Wonders of the World' by readers of the highly respected travel magazine 'wanderlust'

The flights are easy but work better for a 'very' long weekend. 2h 40mins there 2h 30mins back.
Siem Reap Airways
Out on FT827 (Monday and) Friday at 17:05 arrives 18:45
back on FT824 Wednesday 09:25 arrives 12:55

Arrive Friday night after work. Sat Sun, Mon, Tues back on Wed

You can visit all the 'must see' sights but also have time to visit some quieter places out in the countryside to see a little of the 'real' Cambodia.

Plenty of accommodation options for all standards, styles and prices.

Hope this helps

Andy

I agree with Degolasse up stair, Guilin is a place you won't miss. The first day, you can travel around Li River by boat. The cruise will last about 4hours, you can see the special landscapes along the river. Then you can live in Yangshou, and drink at West Street at night.
The second day, you can travel in Guilin city, to see the Elephant Trunk Hill, Fubo Hill, Ludi Cave, etc.
The third day, you can go to Longsheng to visit Longji Terranced Fields Scenic Sopt.
If you want the pictures, please send messages to me. I can send you some. ;)
