I'm leaving home for nine months to do volunteer work. I will be with a group of ten people and we will go to three different places for three months each. All within Canada. I need to go from winter to summer and I have to fit everything in one 55 pound suitcase and a 22 pound carry on. I don't want to forget anything essential. Any suggestions?
start with less and you can always buy more as you go along.
Here are a couple of links for packing tips and a packing list. They are TP lists and can be found under the TOOLS link on the left side.
Choose clothing that you can layer to accommodate the changes in weather and that can be mixed/matched. It will save on space. But, don't forget a warm hat, gloves/mittens, scarf and some type of walking/hiking boot that can be waterproofed. We use either the spray waterproofing (and do 2 coats) or I also have a tin of mink oil (looks like an ointment) that I rub in thoroughly. Lightweight tank type undershirts work well for under regular shirts and/or sweaters to keep your torso warm. They also take up very little space.
