I will say that if you are on a schedule, pay attention to Chinese New Year. Yes, great to be in a big city and get involved, but more importantly, reservations on buses/trains/planes etc are REALLY hard to come by in the days either side. Actually, New Years day itself is possibly the easiest to travel.

Going TO Beijing and Shanghai, and between them is normally still fairly easy, but going away from them can be a nightmare, as all the Chinese are trying to go home for the holiday. I ended up - as did a good 10-15 others - stuck in Shanghai for 2weeks longer than planend last year (i wasn't on any kind of schedule, so it was fine, and actually worked out really well), simply because it wasn't possible to get reservations anywere. One guy left 4 times, in the 2weeks before it, and never managed to get more than a couple of hours away.

You CAN still get unreserved tickets on trains which have seating carriages, but there is always a huge crush to get to the seats, so if you do travel this way expect to stand/get wedged in somewhere the the whole journey (fine for short trips of a few hours, but longer trips are not always so full if you can't sit/sleep/move/stretch/go to the toilet etc)

The Chinese New Year is on Feb. 18 in 2007, so it's still ok to travel around China in January. I think the travel peak will most likely happen in Febuary.

so chinese new year is feb 18th ?
good to know

does anyone know what the best way is to get around?
since i would like to visit cities as well that are quite distanced from one another?

from shanghai to hong kong for example, better just to book a plane or is it feasible to travel the distance by bus or train and enjoy the scenary?

Whether travel around by air, by train or by bus really depends on time and money. I would not recommend you to travel by bus, which is not comfortable or safe. For short distant trip, travel by train is quite good. For long distant trip, you can check with the local travel agent or flight ticket booking website to see whether there's discount ticket available. If you are lucky enough, you can buy cheap flight tickets.

There are night trains from city to city, so you can take trains in mainland. But there is no train from Hong Kong to Shanghai. If you really want to take train, you can go to Guangzhou from Hong Kong and then transfer to Shanghai. But I think it's more convenient to go there by air. Check whether there's discounted ticket available.

beckysh is wrong. There's definitely a train running between Hong Kong and Shanghai, departure every other day.

hello everyone,

cant sleep so just opened a bottle of wine and checking mails. pretty cool this travellerspoint website.

so ellyse you say there is train connection from shanghai to hong kong, how long will it take approximately?

another question, what is the best way to get from beijing to shanghai?

can anyone tell something about the climate that i will be facing there in january?

what about accomodations? i have met an old friend last week who spend half a year around there working, the max they spend for a night was about 9 euro, what kind of accomodation can one expect for that rate?

any tips on good hostels etc with a nice atmosphere ?

what to watch out for in china, i just had a client recently that installed windmills around some major chinese cities, he suggested me not to go into the suburbs around the cities,

;)Hi, Jan,
I suggest u choose the airway from Beijing to Shanghai.
the airways fee is 1130RMB. and usually u can get the discount tickets. and it is much faster.
the climatre in North China is cold and the temperature wil always below or around zero. so you'd beter take warm clothes along.
and for the hotel in Beijing, Shanghai, four a four star hotel, it maybe 500RMB a night, it is comfortable.
