Haven't been there, but Guatemala being kinda smallish, I reckon a month would suffice for a first acquaintance.

Hi Chinx -
I haven't been to Guatemala but I absolutely fell in love with Laos when I was there - it was my favourite country in South East Asia. Just really laid back, loads of friendly locals and some beautiful scenery. A month would definitely be enough to see everything (although I ended up spending three whole weeks in the Mekong delta - found a really nice bungalow and just couldn't bear to leave it!) Try and do most of your travelling by boat - you get to see some amazing sights and the roads are awful in Laos (at least they were when I was there, but then that was a while ago.)
Anyway, good luck with the decision! Gimme a shout if you need any more advice, as I said it was a while ago since I was there but I'm happy to help if I can.

Cheers,
Jess

I haven't been to Laos yet, but every traveller that I have spoken to who has been there, has spoken very highly about it. I have been to Guatemala, and I must say that I wasn't that impressed about it. Tikal were pretty good, but apart from that it wasn't overly great and the people were not that friendly either.

Hi Chinx,

(sounds like hijinx).

When are you planning your trip to either country? If you wait about one month I can tell you my opinion having been to both countries. I've been to Guatemala & will be traveling to Laos.

Hi, Lao (Lhung Prabang was awesome). Went for a walk at 6am and met a young monk (14 years old) in a monestry having a break, inside I heard the others chanting and singing and after a few minutes he has to go as his "bit" was coming up!

The capital I guess was nice, I stupidly walked everywhere to save $2 for the bike taxi ride.

The america embassy gate was funny as they slid it across as I walked past.

The hoste was the worst ever.

Only spent 3 nights,

would you fly direct? I took Mekong River from Thailand staying in Puk Beng in the high north, awesome! Candlelight india (tasted out of a jar) cuisine! Then 24 hr manic bus to Hanoi, Vietnam.

Also cnstantly bumped into fellow travellers from Bangkok!!!!!
