OK, heres the snag - i can get onto just about every website i want to - but i can't download/sign in to MSN messenger and can't sign into BT Yahoo messenger (my ISP version). I also can't download Yahoo messenger. My ISP help desk were as useful as a chocolate fire guard.

Any body have any ideas on a fix. Is it something to do with my firewall settings.

Thanks,
Dave.

Do you have a hardware firewall/router or are you using software firewall?

I use Norton. I can log into hotmail and yahoo mail ok, just the messenger services i'm having snags with.

A few things to check which could help in identifying the problems.

1. Is this your work or home PC? If it is your work PC, the network administrator might have put some filters/restrictions on websites and files that you can download.

2. What error message did you get when you try to download MSN? Are you able to download other things from other websites? Try to download some new software/updates from microsoft.com and see if it is possible.

3. MSN Messenger has a connection troubleshooter. Let it run and see which part of the diagnostics it has problem with.

4. Try disabling the Norton/firewall. If that solves the problem, chuck away Norton. Or you could add MSN and Yahoo! Messenger in the allow/safe list.

5. Check the Windows Firewall in Control Panel. Make sure that MSN and Yahoo Messenger is in the Exceptions list.

Adding

  1. 6) Uninstall Norton and throw the box out the window

  1. 7) See #6

:p

Hehe, I guess if you like it, to all their own. In any case there could also be some options to allow programs to pass through your firewall. Hien's #4

Thanks, the real world sucks though. Too much traffic and too many PC problems (amongst others in a long list).

I've tried what's been suggested and the problem persists. I have also hit my PC with a large hammer and that didn't solve the issue either.
