Hiking poles - Carry-On or Check-In

Travel Forums Travel Gear Hiking poles - Carry-On or Check-In

I'm planning a RTW and hope to pack light enough to fit a Carry-on size pack. Do airport security allow hiking poles with your Carry-on or insist you check them in?

TIA

I'm pretty sure in the US you have to check them. I have the same problem traveling carry-on only: I can't bring a hiking pole or a Swiss Army knife.

Argh! That sux! Defeats the purpose of my carry-on plan. A REI rep told me he used a PVC pipe to store his hiking poles. Upon inspection, airport security let him carry-on. Oh well... who knows.

I'll just be prepared should they insist I check them.

Thanks!

Yeah, the new regulations make it much harder to be carryon-only.

The risk of attempting to carry something on is that if they reject it, you might have to go back the the front of the airport to check it, which means waiting in the security line again. So if you're taking something you're not sure about, make sure to get there extra early just in case there's a long security line and you have to go through it twice. Other than that, it can't hurt to try.
