Hey;
wondering if anyone who has travelled central america (mainly mexico/panama) on a surf trip; what they thought of it? did they encounter many difficulties?
cheers

Talked to some surfer dudes when I was in Mancora, Peru; they told me that transportation was a problem, since bus companies handle equipment in as rough a manner as all other luggage. Same for safe-keeping gear in hostels.

Garrett, I have been to Guatemala, El Salvador surfing and Honduras looking for some surf there. No difficulties as long as you dont roam around at night as stores closed early and the bad elements come out. I never have rented a car used to the bus system as they drive very bad. Learn some spanish, keep low profile. I just got back from Honduras in October and going back in January. Honduras doesn't have much surf as it is on the east side of the Carribean Sea. But it will get some from hurricanes and cold fronts off the coast. What i've been told from local fisherman it goes off with a another surfer to be seen. Have been to Mexico mainland also but more and more mexicans are surfing more than ever but they are cool with travelling surfers. I have taken a surf trip from california to central america solo on the bus and back for less than a 1000usd back in 1990 for about two months.

Went surfing in Costa Rica in a place called Jaco on the Pacific coast which was great. hired the boards there though as didn't want the hassle of transporting them by plane and bus. Good little town with restaurants, bars and cheap accomodation.
