Hi going to Chile, Peru, Bolivia and argentina. Thinking about taking my digitial slr to do some photography, but I have been advised against it as I been told it might make me a target. But I would really like to be able to take it with me, what do you guys think? Is it dangarous, is there a high chance of getting mugged?
There is always some chance of getting mugged, but that shouldn't stop you from taking the thing along, you'd miss the opportunity to make some splendid photos.
I don't know what dimensions we're talking, but best stow it away out of sight, preferably under your clothes on your body. NEVER have it in your hand luggage on a bus; that's how I (and many others) lost mine once. And of course, upload your photos regularly, so that if you loose it, at least you'll have your pictures.
What do you mean never store it in your hand luggage? Is it a bad idea to keep it in the treckpack. If i store it under my cloth it will look like i have a 10 inch tumour sticking out of my stomach.
Thank you for the response by the way. I was leaning towards taking it with me.

I think what he means is not to leave it in your luggage.
My advice is you can take it in your handbag. Don't hang it in your neck and walk around showing how big your camera is. If you're going out at night, leave it at a safe (hotel) or locked in your cabinet (hostel). There is always a chance of getting robbed, but what's the point of having something you can't use.
No, I meant your hand luggage, i.e. the stuff you take with you on the bus. I was a victim of in-bus pickpocketing, and it happens quite often. In the belly of the bus, your belongings are much safer.
I think it's OK if you carry your camera in your treckpack, just keep it always with you, don't leave your hand luggage in places where you can't see it. If the bus companies are good, there's little chance of you getting robbed inside the vehicle, but anyway keep things on sight.
In hotel and hostels, always lock your valuable stuff.
Good luck! Tonya
