Hi everyone. I'm new to this forum, been reading up on some really handy tips in here.

I'll be travelling alone in Sth America from March/April 2007 for ~6mths or till my money runs out. To save costs I was thinking of hitchhiking from town to town. Can anyone give me tips about this?

If anyone wants to hitchhike with me it would be AWESOME!!! My route/direction is something like this:
Rio > Iguazu > Asuncion > Santa Cruz > La Paz > Lake Titicaca > Arequipa > Nazca > Lima > Cuzco > Quito > fly to La Paz > and go south along the west coast to Santiago > El Calafate > and work up the east coast of Argentina to BA.

I'm not even sure if that's feasable with the amount of money and time that I have.

If anyone has any advise about how realistic this is, or advise on hitchhiking, or if they will be taking a similar route around the same time it would be great to hear from you!

Thanks,
Yvonne

NO!

It is NOT safe to hitch-hike, and in any case, no-one should EVER do that on his own. Busses are cheap and safe, stick to those.

It's not safe to hitchhike in these places. And I think it'll not be easy. I don't think many people in this places would trust to take a strangers inside their cars.

Don't take chances to save some bucks.

Be safe.

the reason why i was asking was because I have talked to a few ppl about Hitching in Sth America and they did not experience any problems, but I've also heard bad stories so I just wanted to get a general consensus.

So I guess I won't be HH in Sth America, but I'm still looking for travellers around the area for some company!

Thanks everyone,
Yvonne

Good choice! Those people who told you it was OK to HH are very lucky to be safely home.
Buses are cheap, don't take unnecessary risks. Not even in small towns is safe, ordinary people won't get strangers into their cars, it's considered a dangerous practice.

In a lot of places private cars double up as taxis (unregistered taxis) , so if you are going in the same direction as them they'll drive you for a small fee. But even this is not safe as you can't tell which of these cars are just wanting an extra fare for the petrol and which are saying that they are taxis merely to get an unsuspecting woman into the car. Plus if you don't know the area you have no idea if they are taking you in the direction you want to go or not. Definitely not a good idea!

Buses are good, plus they are the ideal way to meet fellow travellers going in a similar direction.

i know i am going to sound stupid but why isnt it safe?? People told me not to hitch hike in France and i never had a problem same as in spain, people tell backpackers not to hitch a ride in Australia just because we had ONE serial killer - but i know that australia is extremely safe for hitch hiking - befor i was old enough to drive it was the only way i got around. i know Australia Europe and South America are 3 totally different ball parks but WHY is it so unsafe? Do south american countries had high rates of sexual assaults etc?

First ...use your common-sense, never hitchhike alone only with others travel-mate!!!
About Argentina, in Patagonia, I hear good advises about nice people helping travellers along Carretera Austral (40), all the farmers around are famous hostting people, they are friendly.
" Of course every door is open if your respect and show good manners"
If you run without money I recommend you to offer your help (work) for transportation...
Good Luck!!

My friend and I decided to hitchhike in Switzerland once and got picked up by an old lady. She told us that the reason she picked up hitchhikers was to warn them about what happened to her daughter, who-with a friend- got raped and badly beaten by a guy they got a lift with. And this happened in Switzerland!!!!! I've never hitch-hiked since!

Its just one of those things- like walking through the forest at night alone. In most cases nothing is likely to happen, but if something does happen its a "if-they're-gonna-be-stupid-enough-to-do-it" scenario.
If you have the money to travel, you can surely afford the couple of dollars a bus ride costs. Its a lot more fun anyway!
