Wow, that's pretty short sighted in my opinion! kea-root could have tons of reasons to go there, not in the least because he might be in the vicinity already. Regardless of that, your comment just seems really uncalled for and not in the spirit of a travel website... and I hate to point it out, but it's a shorter flight than Australia

Pierre, I was in Tahiti (Papeete) for a stopover earlier this year but that's as far as I got. It was actually one of the options for my wife and me to visit but after some asking around we opted for the Cook Islands instead. From what we heard Tahiti (and the rest of French Polynesia) is a LOT more expensive than the Cook Islands, mainly due to being linked up with France and thus the euro. The Cooks on the other hand are linked to NZ and the NZ dollar which works out better. Also, apparently imported food is actually cheaper than locally grown produce! Go figure! Then certain people mentioned the people in the Cooks being much more friendly and the beaches being nicer (possibly not on islands like Bora Bora, but I'm guessing you weren't planning to head there if you're after budget).

All in all, it was a pretty easy decision for us and I can't say I regretted it for a minute. The Cooks are magnificent!

Considering I;m from canada too and I just looked for a flight to tahiti and the cheapest I found was 2 grand. I doubt any backpacker could really afford that

But not everyone on a travel site is a backpacker though... with oil prices the way they are, 2 grand doesn't sound too unreasonable if you're flying to NZ and back and it's a free stopover (which Tahiti/Cook Islands etc. usually are if you fly Air NZ). If you want to go anywhere in the Pacific, it's going to cost you, regardless of the kind of traveller you are!
