Las Vegas to Tijuana

Travel Forums North America Las Vegas to Tijuana

I am leaving las vegas on 29 december to tijuana. i was just wondering what the best way to do this is.

was thinking of hiring a car with my 4 mates and driving or catching the grayhound. Grayhound takes like 8 hours and costs $53 each. Car will cost about the same, but with 5 people will be a bit crampt. How long would it take to drive and is there cheaper ways to get there than these two options.

I have found that when I rent a car in Las Vegas, they are very particular about where you can drive the car. When I've rented there, they only allow the car to be driven to the surrounding states (California, Arizona, Utah). You might have to pay extra to drive a car into Mexico. Also, unless you are planning on returning to Las Vegas, you could pay a hefty fee to drop the car off in a different location than where you rented it.

Personally, I like the idea of the car because it allows you to stop and see things as you pass them, and also set a route that isn't all boring interstate. But then if I was spending a few days in Tijuana, I wouldn't really want to have to worry about having to park and leave a car alone there.

As for other options that are cheaper, probably nothing cheaper than the bus (maybe hitch hiking).

C C,
You can drive LV to San Diego in about 5 hours. Hiring a car will be the cheapest way to do this trip. Walk across the border, DO NOT take the car. US insurance is not valid in Mexico and you would be liable for all damages. You can walk to most of the sights in Tijuana, or hop in a taxi or a bus. Check with the rental agency, but I think you will better off bringing the car back to LV.

thanks for you help guys.

i reakon that the car is the best option. Drive it to San Diego and park it. Where should i park the car, do i have to pay and put it in a car park, because after TJ for 3 days i have to get back to LA for a flight? what do you guys reakon is the best way to do al this?

Does anyone know about the rough costs of dropping a car off not at the location that you hire it? The USA seem to have a knack at springing costs on people at the last minute. It doesnt mention this cost in any of the quotes given, but i know it exists.

Also am i likely to get much traffic from LV to TJ on the 29th December?

C C,
There are car parks right at the border, and yes, you do have to pay. It was around $7/day if I remember right. I would drive back to LAX and turn the car in there.

C C, I called Avis and a mid size car from one of the hotels costs $275 for 7 days, unlimited mileage, dropping off at LAX. Big car is $285 for 7 days. I would get the full size car since you have 5 guys in it. $285 split 5 ways is pretty cheap transport. Send me a PM if you have questions or need any help.
