My plan is to spend 2 months in New Zealand starting October '07, bearing in mind i'll be travelling alone (unless i meet someone on the way) and i won't be working is this too long?? Once i'm done there i'll be flying to Oz with a WHV.

I think 2 months is just about right to enable you to see everyhing properly and not have to rush. I'd say you need around 5 -6 weeks on the south island and 2-3 on the north island. are you going to travel on one of the backpacker buses? I used stray which was good fun. send me a pm if you need any more info.

Just looking at the Stray website, looks cool!

I thought stray were good - its fun and sociable but you're not forced into drinking/partying etc if you don't want to, and they tend to get off the beaten track more than some of the others. They seem to be one of the only ones that go to stewart island which is well worth a visit as its beautiful. Magic bus are another option.

By the way, I would recommend doing a tour of Doubtful Sound rather than Milford sound - its much less touristy and more beautiful in my opinion. also much better value for money as the tours are longer. and don't miss abel tasman national park - it's beautiful!

stray seems to be the most expensive of the three tour companies (kiwi, magic bus)
