I am off to Bali on the 9th of December for about 2 months. I am staying with my family and for that reason havent planned much travel. We are off for two weeks to Surabaya but I would really love to do some travel on my own. Can anyone recommend some places that are not too touristy (I'm not really into the whole party scene at Kuta) I want to see the real Bali and learn something about the culture. I wouldn't mind going to some nearby Islands that aren't too far away- but I don't want to spend all my time lying on the beach. Just want to see what are the top places to see...
Ubud is a really nice town to visit, quite arty and has a nice vibe. There's a cool monkey temple as well, gets quite a few tourists, but still worth a visit I think.
The best way to see Bali is if you hire a moped, I suppose this depends on how confident you are, if not hire a driver. Explore rice fields, temples and volcanoes. The one I saw was Mt Batur, which is fairly near Ubud. Many people climb this volcanoe early in the morning to see the sunrise at summit. This has become quite touristy though, you'll be pushed into hiring a guide.
Obviously if you like surfing & diving, there are plenty of places all around the island to do this.
I like Bali, but don't think I ever experienced so much hassle as I did there compared to other countries in SE Asia. I guess I just stuck out with blonde hair & blue eyes.
Forgot to say, if you want to visit other islands, Nusa Lembongan, Lombok & the Gilli Islands are supposed to be nice, unfortuately I didn't get to see them due to the terrible weather conditions I had when I was there: heavy rain, thunder & wind, boats were cancelled obviously.
