i'm also looking for a good location to spend new years in... although not this year, but next year... i've read about a celebration called Hogsmanay in Edinburgh, Scotland that is supposed to be huge and crazy... sounds like a good party, but who knows... i've also spent new years in Madrid, Spain, partying down town at Puerta del Sol... the spaniards sure do know how to throw a good bash!! hope this helps, and if you know of any other places, let me know!
laur ;)

Hogmanay is mint, was there in 2003. Its your classic street party scene and after bar and pub parties. Tickets are cheap to the outdoor part but reserve your hostels or hotels like 6 months in advance as they book quick. I called over 20 places before I found one room in a 4 star bed and breakfast for 220 pounds a night. party is on Princess Street and is the 4th largest in the world.

IMO no place on earth beats Paris (and the Eiffel Tower at 23:45). It's beautiful beyond belief, people are festive but not out of control, and there's nothing better than a great French meal and plenty of wine a bit earlier in the evening. Zoom

Zoom - that's good to hear as I'll be in Paris for the New Year.

I was in Prague a few years back and had a great time - it was freezing, but it was beautiful.

I've also heard amazing things about Edinburgh.

Reykjavik, Iceland is amazing! At midnight the sky explodes with fireworks. Most people go completely overboard in fireworks and downtown afterwards is great.
