Myself and my friend have a stop off in Dubai for a week and was wondering if anyone knew of anywhere good to stay. Not sure if they have hostels or if its all hotles but we will be on a budget so just looking for some help! Also, does anyone know the best places to go for cheap electrical goods and designer handbags - need to stock up for my xmas shopping!

Thanks Much!

I stayed in the Dubai YHA. I've put a couple of links in with info about it.

It's clean and when i was there it included a free breakfast. The manager was called Mr Ahmed and he was really helpful with arranging tours etc. It's a bus journey out of the centre, ie Dubai Creek etc but very close to the airport and there's a big supermarket nearby if you want to eat on a budget.

not sure about the shoppping.

How much do you want to spend, there are some cheap places because many people visit Dubai for bulk shopping and many are not from wealthy countires so they do exists, it depends really how much you are happy to spend.

Hi Louissa

Thanks for your reply. We would probably be on a budget of approx 35 UK pounds (Oz$85) per day for accommodation, not sure if this is a realistic budget or not?

Pinkdebs, as you say you want to stock up for Christmas then sounds to me you are going within the next few weeks, you would be hard pushed to find Dubai accommodation under AUD 100 at all, places that might be just under AUD 100 would be Queens Hotel, that is in Deira and near the Gold Souk. Small pool.
Another is the Semi Ramis, but if I memory serves me well Queens would be more convenient. If you can stretch to about AUD 120 the San Marco, the new Peninsular takes you into the AUD 130 range.
You could find cheaper but end up paying taxi fares to get places!
Dubai is great for a stopover and think how much you will save on shopping, personaly I would splash out a bit to enjoy the place!
You can soak up the atmosphere, take a boat ( cheap ) to ride across the Creek, you can snack food from all over the world, whether you love Pizza or Indian or Asian food plenty of cheap places to eat very well, so I would go the extra on the accommodation and enjoy, after all when would be the next chance!
Do a search for 'stopover hoteld Dubai' and you should find Nongasia which goes to Asiaoz and Hotelclub, quite cheap.;)

Go to Karama market for fake designer bags. You may have to ask them about it as they don't really display them any more; they'll probably take you in the back somewhere.
Happy shopping

I had a 2 days stay between flights. I wanted to find accomodation that is not too expensive (I was on Asian budget). I found a youth hostel that is next to the airport. Its a pretty decent youth hostel (forgot the name). It is approx. 15 dollar (P.P)for the room. You are little out of the way, but there is busline and a huge supermarket;)

I realize that this the same hostel bex76 talked about in the second post of this thread.
