Stop off en-route to New Zealand??

Travel Forums Australia / New Zealand & The Pacific Stop off en-route to New Zealand??

I'm going to work in NZ at the end of January for 3-6 months. I'm planning on stopping over for 2-3 days at a halfway point. Bangkok, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur are the 3 destinations I am considering. Which one would you suggest I go for? Or have I overlooked a better option?

I will be working and living alone in Auckland, so each weekend I will be looking to go exploring. Where do you suggest I explore first?

Also at the midway point of the contract i get a 2 week holiday. I was looking at Fiji, Bali or Oz. Although I'm thinking of avoiding Oz as I will potentially be working on a future contract there which will give me ample opportunity to explore. Again, what do you think is the best option? Or have I overlooked somewhere else in the region?

Any advice and information regarding these questions would be gratefully recieved.

How about fly the other way round and stop off in LA?

Is LA any good? I wrote it off because I thought one of the other three would be more interesting.

I've never been, will do one day though. If it was me i'd go to LA....

Just had a look at LA on a few sites and does definitely sound worth a visit. I'm a big fan of the states anyway, did Miami and the Everglades last year and loved it. I suppose I could do LA on the way back rather than flying against clock. Cheers for your help anyway.

I have been to Singapore and I really enjoyed it. If you go it's worth taking in the night safari at the Zoo on Sentosa Island, Orchard Road, Jurong Bird Park and you can't visit Singapore without having a Singapore Sling in Raffles. I have a blog on this site here http://mostrim.travellerspoint.com/ if you want to have a look.

Of your 3 original options, I personally would go with Thailand, its a great stop-over destination full of friendly people and interesting culture. As for LA, I have been and was rather unmoved by my time there. It was neither good nor bad, but I guess there's plenty to do there and at least they speak English Venice beach is nice and interesting for people watching. Hang round Manns Chinese Theatre to see if you can score free tickets to a taping of some TV show. But I'd definitely go for Bangkok on the whole.

Also, I'm a NZer and have to recommend Rotorua as a weekend destination - have a go on the Zorb:)

Singapore or Bangkok. I like KL but I think there is less to see, not quite as suitable for a stopover.

Singapore if you want a nice, clean, modern asian city with great shopping and smart eating, easy to get around and an interesting chinatown.

Bangkok if you want that crazy bustling asian city experience, street food and temples.

Personally I would think that either would be a better bet than LA - LA has good bits but it takes a lot of driving to get to them, and anyway you've been to the states already?

For weekend trips from Auckland, I liked the bay of islands for a quiet scenic few days, also taking boat trips out the islands in the Bay of Auckland (Rangitito is a nature reserve on a volcanic island and Waiheke has great wine), and yeah Rotorua is great - do whitewater sledging as well as Zorbing.

This is exactly why have always wanted to go to Bangkok..... You have sold it to me, I think I may do LA or Singapore on the way back. Thanks everyone for your fantastic advice. I will definitely go zorbing!? And also the boat trips to volcanic islands...... I do have 26 weekends to kill.

Does anyone have any advice on where I should take my 2 week break whilst in NZ? Fiji, Bali or elsewhere?
