Hi,
I would recommend http://www.travellers-autobarn.com.au/newsite/frameset.html
for buying a car, but they don't have a Perth office - maybe you could start from Cairns instead.
Read Bill Bryson's 'Down Under' before you go - he drives from Darwin/Cairns (can't remember!) right down to the 'Red Centre'.
Beware of the flies.
Alternatively, there is a Perth - Sydney railroad that stops off in Alice Springs, if your budget will stretch to it.

hmmm. Don't know if i would recommend the drive. I ain't done it but i have done the coast trip up to Darwin from Perth.
Definately go coast - there is more to see. If you are starting in Perth head up north for a bit. places like kalbarri are nice (gorges, and apparently good fishing; used to live there and wasn't so bad)
oh and monkey mia (denham - i think that's how it is spelt but you can find it under either monkey mia or sharks bay) is definately worth the visit. Heaps commercial now but you can feed the dolphins when they come into the bay (watched by a CALM officer these days)

oh and apparently the pinicles are worth the visit as well.

sorry it's not much help but outback isn't my forte (used to live in it so don't love it so much anymore... )

Oh greenough (just outside geraldton) has a great wildlfe park where you can pet and feed the animals (lots of native ones)
but geraldton is a definite miss. Pretty boring town with one nightclub (if that is still even open) although for a short time it isn't bad.

if you want to head further north there are some cool places to visit with some really different stuff but that's probably too far out of the way...
