I've lived within 5 kms of Manly for ever (all my life). In between I've visited over 50 countries for extended periods and I keep coming back to this amazing place. It is very friendly (by western standards) and there are many alternatives for accommodation ranging from YHA (one evn in a national park 35 kms north) thru backpacker hostels to 5 start hotels. December/January is a great time to be here. There are always loads of travellers, lots to do, close to the city via the magnificent ferry service & climate to kill for. Here's a link where you can get info about accommodation though I've never tried it -

Hi,

I would avoid Boardriders Hostel in the centre of Manly. We stayed there for a few days and the kitchen was a disgrace. Also the other people were mostly working Kiwis who were all miserable - stuck doing crappy jobs and letting everyone know how miserable they were. Same with lots of hostels in Sydney actually - people head there and get stuck for ages doing rubbish jobs that don;t pay enough for them to save and move on.

We also stayed at Manly backpackers which had a more relaxed / surfer feeel to it, with weekly BBQs etc. Bigger rooms also so I'd recommend that anyday.

Enjoy.
