Traveling from the US to Switzerland in January....looking for some decent ski/snowboard resorts in Switzerland that are beautiful yet, not too 'touristy'. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ian

Hi. I'm in the same dilema. Last year I went to Lauterbrunnen, wich gives access to Murren (loved it), Wengen (also great) and Grindwald (didn't go). Lauterbrunnen is basic a street, but Murren and Wengen are car free villages, I would say with more families than youg people looking to party. I was looking for something like it this year, I'm trying Engelberg, but not sure yet. If you decide to go to Lauterbrunnen I reccomend Hotel Staubach (great price and great staff).

Have fun.

Hi

I am from Switzerland and i love skiing. I dont know what you are planning to to. But here you have some recommondations (for the german-speaking part of switzerland):

Good For Party, Snowboard, Fun Parks etc. (but many people, touristic, busy): Davos, Laax

Excellent for Skiing, Superb Restaurants, Fun Park, cheap(its taxfree and cheaper than others but still expensive compared to Austria), quiet. Samnaun. It's my favourite place in Switzerland. I just love it! It's a small town in the end of a valley. Its beautifully located and quite remote. But it's worth going there. The ski-region is connected to an austrian village which is much bigger. So the skiing area is really huge (over 200 km ski-runs) and the most modern of europe ( all the chair-lifts are covered etc.). You have the best Restaurants i know of all the skiing regions and beautiful Graub√ľnden-Style Houses. And its not Expensive. A standart Hotel costs you like 80 USD and a good meal (good meat, salad, patatos etc.) about 20 USD. Just check out www.samnaun.ch You would love it. I'm sorry for beeing so prejudiced but i was skiing in nearly 20 different locations in switzerland and that's the one i fell in love with.

if you have any questions just ask!

bye

Philippe

We're arriving on Basel Airport. So I'm afraid it is kind of far away. Is Samnaum worthed to spend that much time on the road? Also I'm going with a child and everybody is a beginner. Do you think it's a good place? Any other suggestions? Is Engelberg a bad idea?

Thanks again.

Hi Aline,

I live in Switzerland and I know most of our Ski areas very well. Especially Engelberg wher I learnd to ski. When I was young (5 - 13) I spent every year two weeks in Engelberg. It's a nice place to learn ski but also to perfect it. Engelberg is also known for Telemark skiing and I think the best place to learn it. Sometimes you see more Telemarkers on the run then skiers or boarders. Try it it's very interesting and easy to learn. Don't forget it's a tourist place too (especially asians because of mount Titlis) but you never wait to long. I love this place. If you have some other questions, ask only
